How QR Codes Work
A QR code is a two-dimensional matrix of dark and light modules arranged in a square grid. The three large squares in the corners (called finder patterns) tell the scanner how the code is oriented. The smaller patterns encode alignment, version, and format information. The remaining area contains the actual data, encoded using one of four modes: numeric, alphanumeric, byte, or Kanji. Reed-Solomon error correction codes are appended to the data so the code can be read even if up to 30 percent of it is damaged or obscured.
When a smartphone camera detects a QR code, it identifies the finder patterns, determines the code version and error correction level, reads the data modules, applies error correction, and decodes the result. The entire process takes less than a second on modern hardware. The decoded content might be a URL (opening a browser), a WiFi string (joining a network), a vCard (saving a contact), a phone number (offering to dial), or plain text (displaying it on screen).
